BSC Day 13! – 12/04/09
SUNDAY today was unusual. I woke up early ( around 8+ which was early to me ) to do homework. Thanks to Lin Zhuo for buying breakfast for our whole room.
Felt an urgency to do some work since it was the Sunday therefore did until it was lunchtime. I, Zheng Jie, Zheng Ting, Kai Sheng, Lei Bing, Lin Zhuo, Joshua, Jun Eng, Alcander went to 小西天 to have our lunch. We thought it was some food paradise or whatsoever, but it turned out to be a complete disappointment. We had lunch at a stall which we all thought was most the most appealing. The food there is dreadful. It is SO OILY that I think I could cook fish & chips with the amount of oil left in my bowl. The other ala carte dishes are also exceptionally oily.
Went back and did all my homework till dinner. Zheng Ting, Lei Bing, Lin Zhuo, Jun Eng, Joshua went to eat with Zheng Ting’s guardian for dinner. I heard that it the place that they ate was pretty unique and high class. Did not really feel jealous though as I don’t really like to depend or trouble people that I am not familiar with. Anyway tonight’s dinner was with the Xi An scholars who just came back.
I went back to mug again. It was a super mugging day!

BSC Day 14! – 13/4/09
First things first, Happy Birthday Linshan! :)
I remembered during the night my blanket fell off, felt shivering cold until I went down to pick up my blanket on the floor ( I sleep on the top of the double-decker bed ). Therefore, I woke up with sore throat with some slight cold.
I felt unwell throughout the whole day & every lesson. I also ate very little. Luckily Monday has sports & games time which we are free to do anything we want. I slept throughout the whole time and felt much better after that.
I did some homework, CDE during online lessons. I also bought some bleach illustration books because it’s so cheap.
Went back, waited till 12, wished myself birthday wishes & got to sleep.

BSC Day 15! – 14/4/09!
It is my birthday today. Sadly I’m not able to spend the day with my family but who knows what awaits me. I woke up feeling pretty okay. 24 hours recovery!
Today was the fieldtrip to Tianjin. Took a 3 hours bus ride to reach, in which we stopped halfway to take a quick break & get some refreshments. Took some break in between the bus ride while watching some videos & listening to music. When we reach there we realized that it was just a simple eco-city plan. Wasted 3 hours ride to go there, yet we spent less than 1 hour inside the eco-city. Worst still, we have to write a report of it in Chinese when it is so meaningless.
After leaving the place we stopped halfway to shop around some Chinese culture place. I looked around & decided to buy Chinese name posters for my family. It looks mesmerizing.
Later we ate at some restaurant whose specialty is fish dishes. There were lotsa dishes & all of it tasted quite weird but still acceptable. Except the fish. Their specialty fish dish tasted like some Indian fish. It was so full of spices until it tasted like you’re eating leaves.
I went back dormitory to have some rest while some of the rest went to buy a cake to celebrate for me. They came back soon & everyone celebrated it for me. I felt extremely happy & touched. Thanks to everyone who made this my day :)
On a slighter note, I added many things to the laptop, now it looks really cool.
Happy Birthday Max. Thanks to everyone who wishes it to me also.

BSC Day 12! – 11/04/09
Woke up late, & for some reason I think is doing too much Pt the day before, nose started to bleed non-stop. Rested for a while more, soon after, cleaned up the mess. I ate some 包子 & met the rest at lobby.
Travelled to the Beijing Zoo, boarded the ever crowded bus 104.
I explored the zoo with Alcander & Zheng Jie.
We saw lotsa animals ( duh what else ), E.g. Pandas, tigers, lions, elephant, bear, pheasants, fox, nocturnal animals & many underwater creatures.
I also went for the mesmerizing water show. The seals there are called Max & Pipa. How coincidental! The seals performed many stunts like singing, doing pushups without their tails & the normal trick of balancing a ball on their nose. Next was the performance by 5 spectacular dolphins. They were equally as impressive as the seals. The dolphins jumped out of water to a certain height unattainable by human & performed some synchronized dancing in the water.
After that was shopping! At the Zoo Plaza! I was kinda fooled by the name, I thought it sells hundreds & hundreds of animals merchandise but it turned out to be a proper shopping mall!
I explored the gigantic Zoo Plaza with Jun Eng & Lin Zhuo.
Bought some stuff like shoes & jeans.
Lunch was fast because we ate it at the dormitories nearby McDonalds.
Studied & played a bit till dinner. We had dinner at the same 红烧variety shop. Did more work & sleep!

In the faint light of the attic, an old man, tall and stooped, bent his great frame and made his way to a stack of boxes that sat near one of the little half-windows. Brushing aside a wisp of cobwebs, he tilted the top box toward the light and began to carefully lift out one old photograph album after another. Eyes once bright but now dim searched longingly for the source that had drawn him here.
It began with the fond recollection of the love of his life, long gone, and somewhere in these albums was a photo of her he hoped to rediscover. Silent as a mouse, he patiently opened the long buried treasures and soon was lost in a sea of memories. Although his world had not stopped spinning when his wife left it, the past was more alive in his heart than his present aloneness.
Setting aside one of the dusty albums, he pulled from the box what appeared to be a journal from his grown son’s childhood. He could not recall ever having seen it before, or that his son had ever kept a journal. Why did Elizabeth always save the children’s old junk? he wondered, shaking his white head.
Opening the yellowed pages, he glanced over a short reading, and his lips curved in an unconscious smile. Even his eyes brightened as he read the words that spoke clear and sweet to his soul. It was the voice of the little boy who had grown up far too fast in this very house, and whose voice had grown fainter and fainter over the years. In the utter silence of the attic, the words of a guileless six-year-old worked their magic and carried the old man back to a time almost totally forgotten.
Entry after entry stirred a sentimental hunger in his heart like the longing a gardener feels in the winter for the fragrance of spring flowers. But it was accompanied by the painful memory that his son’s simple recollections of those days were far different from his own. But how different?
Reminded that he had kept a daily journal of his business activities over the years, he closed his son’s journal and turned to leave, having forgotten the cherished photo that originally triggered his search. Hunched over to keep from bumping his head on the rafters, the old man stepped to the wooden stairway and made his descent, then headed down a carpeted stairway that led to the den.
Opening a glass cabinet door, he reached in and pulled out an old business journal. Turning, he sat down at his desk and placed the two journals beside each other. His was leather-bound and engraved neatly with his name in gold, while his son’s was tattered and the name “Jimmy” had been nearly scuffed from its surface. He ran a long skinny finger over the letters, as though he could restore what had been worn away with time and use.
As he opened his journal, the old man’s eyes fell upon an inscription that stood out because it was so brief in comparison to other days. In his own neat handwriting were these words:
Wasted the whole day fishing with Jimmy. Didn’t catch a thing.
With a deep sigh and a shaking hand, he took Jimmy’s journal and found the boy’s entry for the same day, June 4. Large scrawling letters, pressed deeply into the paper, read:
Went fishing with my dad. Best day of my life.
"To a child, love is spelled T-I-M-E"

Bsc Day 6!
It was the last day of the first weekend in Bsc, though the next Monday is a holiday for us – It’s 清明节.
Ate breakfast with Zheng Ting, Zheng Jie, Jun Eng, Kai Sheng, Wilson, Yan Rui & Alcander. We ate 炸酱面. However nice it was to the locals, it was awfully salty. Eating the noodles felt worst than drinking saltwater yuck.
Later we went shopping while muggers Yan Rui & Alcander went back to do what they do best. Bought some stuff ^^. It was a fruitful experience man.
Went back dorm at around 4 + to wash clothes & do work.
Done some CDE & English comprehension but was disturbed a bit by Song Ken, Kai Yuan, Jun Eng & Joshua cause they were doing projects day work very noisily.
I had dinner at a very, very far away place with Lin Zhuo, Zheng Ting, Zheng Jie, Jun Eng, Kai Sheng, Wilson & Joshua. Ate lots of local food ordered by Lin Zhuo. It was not bad, except that it was a bit salty. We drank a little bit of beer with 2.6% alcoholic content. Lin Zhuo was complaining later we all get drunk he would have to carry us back. But the minute alcoholic content could not affect us at all.
Homework, sleep ~

BSC Day 7!
It was China’s 清明节 today that’s why there is no school.
Woke up, ate breakfast with Lin Zhuo, Kai Yuan, Joshua & Jun Eng.
We met at the lobby with everyone else to go to the Beijing’s Bird Nest.
The Beijing Bird Nest is exceedingly cool. It felt very nice to be on the stadium, on the track, on the field. The feeling was indescribable. We also saw the 5 teddies + another cow / lamb look alike creature which was the mascot for the Paralympics. I bought some souvenirs for everyone too.
Next was visiting the Water Cube with Wilson & Malcolm, halfway we also met Zheng Ting, Zheng Jie & Kai Sheng. The Water Cube is W.O.N.D.E.R.F.U.L. You’ll feel refreshing & relaxed there. The blue water & white, blue seats make you feel tranquil & unperturbed. I strongly encourage anyone who goes to Beijing to go to the Water Cube. It is truly worth it. I bought a Water Cube purse too, just felt like buying it.
We had lunch & dinner at the same place.
The usual homework, study, teevee, games then sleep ~

BSC Day 8!
Quick breakfast at school then it was computer time – 7.30-8.00am. Had Chinese & Chinese History lessons then it was the trip to 万里长城。
Had an extravagant lunch before reaching there, & I came to realize to reason of it soon after it.
We were expected to climb the 万里长城 in 1.5 hours. I & Dion were buddies for climbing the monster. The air up there was exceptionally thin. It was difficult to breathe up there. You will easily be out of breath. Only some of us climbed up all the way. I only remember Dion, Shane, Lei Bing, Sean Ong, Jun Eng, Joshua, Zheng Ting, Yan Rui, Bin Quan, Guan Bo, Kai Sheng, Wilson, & Lumyi. It was an arduous journey. When we were climbing down my legs are already shaking. I bought an I <3 Beijing shirt & a poster.
I also recommend climbing the Great Wall. But your physique must be strong. The way up is not for chickens (;
Be a man, climb the Great Wall.
Went back for online lessons & realized Mr. Lim wanted us to present our presentation TOMORROW. Rushed through the presentation for the whole night & ate instant noodles for dinner.
____________________________________________
BSC Day 9!
Woke up very early, rushed breakfast & went to continue my CDE presentation. Finished it by 8 & printed it out.
It was the usual Chinese & Chinese History lessons. I’m beginning to adapt to the teachers’ different teaching styles.
Had a bit of revision on Log then it was video conferencing with Mr. Lim. Sean, Me & Joshua prepared but the rest did not. Most of the Xi An scholars who were allocated the earlier questions are expected the present first but since they are in Xi An & not there, we got owned. Everyone got roared but Mr. Lim for almost 3 quarters of the lessons. Mr. Lim decided to change the Xi An scholars to the last few questions while those who were in Beijing now would have to do the earlier questions. Last few minutes were spent on listening to Sean’s presentation. Hope he got an A1 ^.^
Later we travelled to a school which taught the migrant children. It was pure FUN. The children are super duper hyper cyber uber ultra very very cute.
I felt that today was extremely meaningful. Seeing how the migrant children are studying in such shocking environment makes me realize how fortunate I am to be able in such a good environment such as Hwa Chong. Their classroom is very limited and small, with no technology there at all. Their class population is enormous, their classrooms are very dirty, their chairs are in poor quality, and their tables are very old. From a teacher’s point of view I also realize how hard it is to control a class. This trip has been an eye-opener as well as a wake up call to me, for me to realize that I am oh so fortunate, yet always complaining about these and that when others are in a much worse plight than I am. “Be contented”
Some advice for next batch would be that don’t neglect those at the back as they are the ones who are mostly the ones who don’t bother and are playful. Do not underestimate the P4’s. They generally know their abc’s very well, just that their vocabulary is limited. Their Chinese is really good for P4 standard too. I think it is best to include some entertainment value in your lessons like some songs to catch their attention. They lose attention very fast. Be patient with the kids, after all they are still kids. We know it’s hard to keep control of the class but try your best. All the best! :)
SLEEP.
Did until around 1 + and went to sleep, going to continue the presentation tomorrow.
Unexpectedly, I also finished Tutorial 3 & 4 while finishing my CDE Presentation.

Lessons as usual from 8am-5pm. Stress man school hours so long. Mr. Lim still said it was slack.
We went back dorm at 9pm to celebrate. The roommates went to collect the cake we ordered in the morning. While waiting for Zheng Ting to come back I did some math homework. Sian man, so much work!
Many of us celebrated for Zheng Ting then we watched movies together.
Did some homework and slept ~

BSC Day 4!
Beginning to realize school days in BSC are quite repetitive. Everything from morning to night is around the same.
I classify lessons in school are all the same, interesting at times but dull also. Mr. Chia is a good teacher who makes lessons very interactive! I like.
I, Zheng Jie & Zheng Ting explored the surroundings during the free time before dinner to be more familiar with the environment. I bought pens at 3 for 5 yuan which is quite a bargain for ink pens. Tried the well-known 羊肉串, very heaty but awfully tasty! We also found a convenient store that is much more convenient than the one recommended.
It was math lesson for the first time in Bsc so I shall elaborate more on it. Revised Logarithms and did some practice. Difficulties argh!
It was the Closing Ceremony for the Science Week. It seemed to me more like a National Day celebrations. They kept praising the country, the government and the ancestors etc. for all the science experiment. Weird huh!
Played ball after dinner then it is online lessons.
I passed up Chinese compo & Bsc blog entry. Did my www.cf.hic.edu.sg work but could not pass it up because I forgot my password. So stupid GRR. From A1 to B3/4. T.T
Since it is a FRIDAY, went back dormitory, played some Dota & read CDE again. I think I am screwed because my CDE tutorials are so thick & I have yet to read finished those in front of mine.
Ciao sleep!
____________________________________________________________________________
BSC Day 5!
Today was the first Saturday of BSC. I ate breakfast with Zheng Jie, Zheng Ting, Alcander & many others. We ordered 包子,饺子,荷包蛋 & 豆腐脑.
We met up with the other BSC pupils for a trip to Forbidden City, 故宫. The palace was enormous! & crammed full. To just get into the place is an obstacle. The Forbidden City is very mystifying; there are so many palaces and houses that you can’t finish exploring in detail. It was a wonderful experience to be able to tour the place. I recall the movies that always show the Forbidden City and all the heroes whatever, so coooool ~
I ate lunch with Xingbo, Yan Rui, Kelvin, Kai Yuan, Hong Yao & Lin Zhuo. Oh ya! Lin Zhuo is sick so best wishes to my roommate cum China Superstar to recover soon, to cheer us up, & to bring laughter to our room. Back to the topic, I ate 红烧牛肉面, SUPERB!
Played CS all the way till the night then dinner at the same place again. We were going to buy Sean & Kai Sheng some bread for their dinner because they are addicted to CS. I cheated counting the open numbers then we made Zheng Ting buy the food, later when Zheng Ting was pissed we did a fair open numbers, Zheng Ting was still the one to buy. He got damn sian-ed lol.
At night my room tried the Dragon Push-ups & Big Brothers Squats. Dragon push-ups is that everyone do push ups in one line, the person in front having their legs on the person behind. When you pump it is overwhelming, dreadfully heavy. Big Brothers Squats is that everyone sit the other person’s squatted legs, once one person is tried & gives up, everyone will fall. A test of trust and edurance.
Soon we were tired & slept ~

ARGH PASS UP CDE ASSGINMENT TOMORROW DIEEEEEEEE.

BSC Day 3!
I woke up late due to mugging CDE the night before. Went outside for breakfast with sean & leibing, ate 小龙包。Very nice!
Later were Chinese & Chinese literature lessons, which were very different from Singapore’s lessons, less interactive, more of teacher talking only, came to appreciate the OP system more now.
After that was PE lessons, volleyball with the locals. Our Pe lessons are chosen by ourselves, with options of soccer, basketball, volleyball and kick boxing. Quite a different experience playing with other China people and cold weather, never sweat!
Then it was mass exercise with all the students. The movements were weird & hard to catch up, moving your hands here & there etc.
Physics lessons immediately later. We revised on Kinematics as it was very confusing. Started a bit on Newton’s law, which was much more understandable.
Soon we went to the Annual Brain Challenge. Unlike any other quizzes like who wants to be a millionaire, their Brain Challenge is MUCH more interesting & interesting.
We had Chemistry lessons later on. It was very confusing to me but I could still follow the lessons a bit.
Some of us went to watch debate challenge in a while. Their debate introduction & content own our school’s standard. Whenever there is 30 seconds left to speak, there will be a ring which is the garena’s msn sound alerts. When there is no time left the noise is super loud.
I played with Singapore schoolmates’ soccer & basketball after a while. Me zhengjie & zhengting then proceeded to play volleyball with the local people. I am seriously adapting to the cold weather now. Not bad la the weather.
Dinner was delicious! Meatballs & roasted chicken! NAISE! After dinner was online lessons as usual, did some Chinese compo English work.
OKAY so now homework list as follows.

BSC Day 2!
Breakfast was to be ordered by ourselves & paid with the food card. It was quite special.
After that we went to class to do more administrative work & use our laptops.
At around 10 we went for a welcoming ceremony. We were introduced to the school. The school had things such as Chinese artifacts, Chinese artworks, western artworks & even a swimming pool!
Had our lunch & prepared to go to the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall. There were many attractive exhibits there like the Beijing Olympics Architecture, one whole floor made up of Beijing’s 3D map, & even a model of the Forbidden City.
I played volleyball with the locals there when we came back. They were not too good & not bad either. Later we finished our dinner & went for online lessons – English. Finished my book circle ace then went back to dorm to rest.
Studied & played around a bit, then it was lights out for everyone ~
1/4/09 was pretty slack.
at 8:24 PM
BSC DAY 1!
My family & I reached airport very early at around 6+. Checked in my 17.1kg luggage, ate some breakfast and it’s time for departure. Said goodbye to my dearest family & went inside the departure mall to shop. I’m sure gonna miss everyone in Singapore ):
First time sitting an airplane - Plane SQ802! I swear an airplane is super cool. Videos games, movies, music, electricity, food, charger, everything is available, just like a mini home. Watched Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons, ate fish fillet with potatoes, slept like a pig. Airplane ascending and descending was scary, but later it felt quite fun. We arrived at the freezing colddddddd Beijing in approximately 6 hours. Immediately wore all my jackets. Then we waited for the bus which was extremely slow.
Reached school in around half an hour, unpacked our luggage and went to a classroom for briefing. Dinner was better than expected, rice, potatoes, celery with eggs, sweet & sour fish with cucumber, chicken wit veggie, soup & bao. Not bad!
Later we assembled at the Victors, our classroom for some administrative work again. We got our school uniforms which consist of a jacket & long pants, our keys for the utensils locker, local phone card and food card. Soon we were off to the far-away convenient store ( maybe convenient in china’s sense but not in mine ), bought daily necessities like washing powder, air purifier and food.
Called back home to inform everyone I’m safely reached Beijing & is doing pretty well.
We slacked inside the dormitory and read a bit of tutorial 3.
Something really different from Singapore in china is that you can’t throw toilet papers into the toilet bowl if not it’ll clog up. HAHA!
Brushed teeth, washed up and got onto bed at around 12.
Slept peacefully in the dormitory until next day ~
Bye.
